courtyard house, ahmedabad

The design emerged from a response to a wedge shaped plot surrounded on three sides by existing houses and an apartment, located in a residential neighbourhood. An important design consideration was to create a sense of openness in such a site condition.
The arrangement of spaces takes advantage of the wedge profile in creating a north facing courtyard. It is developed in way that each space in the house at both levels feels connected with this courtyard, and is able to get good natural light and breeze. The ground floor is built with a flat slab without beams to enhance the feeling of continuity and connectedness between inside and outside. Further modulation of individual spaces and making of openings is done according to the orientation and edge conditions.
The sense of continuity and quality of light also guide the material selection and treatment of surfaces. The floor is white marble and ceilings are form finished concrete. Interior elements and furniture are made with recycled old teak wood. The exterior treatment combines red sandstone cladding with plastered walls and concrete surface to create a vibrant composition.
