high-void house, ahmedabad

The project involved alterations and extensions to an existing house, in order to adapt it to the new requirements for a family, who had been living here since the 1980’s. The design process works with modifications in layout and structure to allow more natural light and ventilation in the central zone of the house, with an approach that is similar to the Light-Void house.
The existing ‘chowk’ or courtyard was modified to accommodate the dining space. It was also extended to include the new relocated staircase, resulting in a triple height volume. This brought in clearstory light and also helped with natural ventilation. The living areas on the ground level were carefully altered with just sufficient changes, to allow for better layouts and window openings. The entrance area was modified to include an entry vestibule, and still retain a small verandah.
The bedrooms at first level were again modified with small, but valuable additions like balconies, window seats and wardrobe areas. The new staircase was an important architectural feature, made with folded concrete steps and vertical metal screen to accentuate its profile with the natural light of the high volume. All wall surfaces were re-plastered and the internal flooring was redone with kotah stone. The interior treatment was kept simple and austere with elements made of old teak wood and glass to complement the white wall surfaces.
