light void house, ahmedabad

The design deals with alterations and addition to an existing old house with a two bay load bearing structure. Working within the limitations of such a structure, the key idea was to create two clear height spaces, based on the existing staircase shaft in the West and a cut-out in the North-East.
The new staircase was relocated to the North-East and the existing shaft was transformed into a double height dining area. These two spaces together allow good natural light inside and help in cross ventilation, making the central portion of the house more vibrant and lively. All non-load bearing walls on the ground floor were removed to offer the possibility of a long continuous living space adjacent to the double height dining. This further added to the feeling of openness and continuity between the main spaces.
The old entrance porch was altered to offer a terrace with the master bedroom on the first floor, close to the foliage of an existing Bakul/ Borsali tree. The treatment of interior surfaces and elements was kept simple and austere, with a preference for limestone and old teak wood, considering the quality of light and a desire to maintain an earthy, robust nature of spaces.
