pavilion house, ahmedabad

The design emerged from a response to a long narrow site with big Neem and Copperpod trees on the west side, along with a requirement of building only on the southern half of the plot and leave the northern half open for a small garden. It also responds to a desire for creating living - dining spaces on the first floor with a pavilion like sitting room facing the north side garden.
The house is made with a sense of flowing interconnected spaces which are airy, naturally lit and take advantage of the dense foliage of the trees. This is developed with a structure system of reinforced concrete shear walls and a flat slab without beams, which also offers the possibility of making large windows. The more utilitarian functions are enclosed within the concrete walls, allowing the living spaces to be shaped and modulated in a freer manner, according to their individual requirements, orientation and site conditions.
The choice of materials and interior elements was kept simple with form finish concrete, natural stone and wood. This corresponds with a robustness of the concrete structure and the flowing character of the space. The elevated living room pavilion extends out from the main house towards the north side garden. It is made with a steel structure and glass shutters to allow for an enjoyment of the trees and the garden.
