trustnagar house, ahmedabad

The house is located in a small plot in one of the older societies developed during the 1980’s. The plot has two existing houses on the north and west side, and a park on the east side outside the society premises. Within such a plot, the challenge was to work with a small ground footprint and the requirements of a growing family, that needed five bedrooms.
The living – dining spaces at the ground level are laid out in a way that they connect to the outside, taking advantage of the margins, through the entry verandah, the living room windows and the dining sit-out. The dining space is made with a higher volume to draw in good natural light from the relatively open east side and create connectivity with the first floor.
The bedrooms at upper levels include window seats and/ or niches along with one large window to create a more engaging layout and expand the feeling of spacious volume. The second level creates a south facing terrace with the master bedroom, that can also be accessed directly from the staircase. This terrace gets good breeze, especially during the evenings and offers a much-needed place for relaxing in such urban neighbourhoods.
The structure system follows the spatial character and the form language is developed with a combination of concrete, plastered and stone cladded surfaces. The interior is done with white marble flooring, plastered walls and old teak wood furniture.
